The Clinician position is responsible for ensuring exceptional customer service and clinical care. This position is responsible for providing timely and clinically appropriate crisis interventions, screenings, intakes, and referrals that adhere to the standards of LifeWays, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Access Standards, and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and the Michigan Mental Health Code.  This position requires the ability to foster positive engagement with potential consumers that will assist them in beginning their path to recovery.  This position is assigned to the school on school days during the school year.  For non-school days, this position will tasked with bench duties for which they are credentialed or trained to provide. 

Essential Functions:

Service to Students:

  • Providing classroom, group, and individual counseling for children who are experiencing adjustment difficulties in school, home, or the community with an emphasis upon early intervention.
  • Encouraging and assisting families in their pursuit of community services that may assist in the remediation of school centered problems.

Services to Parents:

  • Assisting parents in preventing problems by facilitating communication with the school.
  • Assisting parents to understand problems experienced by their children. This is accomplished through individual and/or group counseling, parent training and referrals to community services.

Services to Teachers/Administration:

  • Providing collaboration and consultation regarding student problems and coordinating plans and actions to meet them. Early identification of problems is emphasized.
  • Assisting in planning educational interventions/services for students.
  • Facilitating the involvement of community agencies in efforts directed toward the remediation of student problems in school adjustment.
  • Providing in-service to schools.
  • Assist school administration, when requested, in investigating disciplinary issues and working with students to recognize appropriate behavior.

Program Evaluation:

  • Maintaining records of all services provided.
  • Maintaining reports of work with students to include social histories, adaptive behavior, reports of differential diagnoses and truancy reports.
  • Reports to appropriate local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Will be familiar with school policies and procedures.
  • Work with Access to link consumers to phone screens for CMH eligibility as needed. 
  • Provides trauma-sensitive and recovery-focused services that result in a positive experience for the consumer.
  • Travel is required and generally occurs in Jackson and Hillsdale counties, but travel within the State of Michigan may be necessary.
  • Responsible for working closely with provider network staff, hospital staff, and natural supports to develop clinically sound diversion and safety planning when appropriate.  
  • Completes service authorizations and admission assignments for services determined to be medically necessary through assessment.
  • Responsible for accurate and clinically competent documentation of all information regarding consumer treatment in electronic medical record within timeliness standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring coordination both internally and externally by routing appropriate documents for all consumers referred in a timely manner.
  • Work a non-traditional schedule which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Assist with Outpatient Therapy Services, Access services, and LifeWays training as needed.
  • Responsible for adherence to all Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) standards and Mental Health Code.


  • Per school agreements this position may require a LLMSW or LMSW
  • Master's degree in human service field, required.
  • Appropriate licensure with the State of Michigan, required.
  • Credentialing requirements for ongoing clinical privileges with LifeWays
  • CPI Non-violent Crisis Intervention training, upon hire.
  • Mental Health First Aid Training, upon hire.
  • Must have reliable transportation*


*LifeWays vehicles are provided to employees for the purpose of transporting consumers; employees must possess a valid MI motor vehicle operator's license and verification of an acceptable driving record.  Personal vehicles may be used for company business when drivers meet the following; valid MI motor vehicle operator's license and proof of personal vehicle insurance in accordance to guideline.
